VILLA AND PARK ANGIOLINA

VILLA ANGIOLINA
Built in 1844 by the Rijeka merchant Ignio Scarpa, Villa Angiolina is considered the birthplace of tourism in Opatija and one of the most important historical landmarks on the Croatian coast. This elegant historic villa marked the beginning of Opatija’s transformation into a prestigious European seaside destination and laid the foundations for Croatia’s oldest and longest-running tourism tradition.
Surrounded by stunning Mediterranean scenery and rich cultural heritage, Villa Angiolina quickly became a gathering place for aristocrats, artists, and distinguished visitors from across Europe. Today, the villa houses the Croatian Museum of Tourism, where visitors can explore the fascinating history of tourism development in Opatija and the Adriatic region.
ANGIOLINA PARK
Created between 1845 and 1860 by passionate nature lover Ignio Scarpa, Angiolina Park is one of Opatija’s most beautiful green oases and an essential part of the town’s cultural and natural heritage. The park surrounds Villa Angiolina with beautifully landscaped gardens, ornamental fields, scenic walking paths, and more than 150 species of plants from around the world.
This historic park is especially known for its exotic botanical collection, including the famous Japanese camellia (Camellia japonica), which later became the official symbol of tourism in Opatija. Thanks to its mild climate, lush vegetation, and peaceful atmosphere, Angiolina Park remains one of the most visited attractions in Opatija, offering visitors a unique combination of history, architecture, and nature.
