The Mediterranean Diet was registered as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2003. The grape, olive and wheat were core components, with olives and vines still growing prolifically along Croatia’s coast.
Must-try Croatian heritage foods prepared by our artisans, include: baked veal or octopus ‘peka’; ‘soparnik’ (chard-filled flatbread) from our wood-fire oven; and ‘prisnac’ (sweet and savoury baked cheesecake) from our pastry house.
Neolithic archeological sites Pokrovnik and Danilo in the Šibenik region have revealed the oldest traces of fermented dairy products (cheeses and yoghurts) found on Danilo pottery from around 7,200 years ago, making cheesemaking 4,000 years older than previously thought (found in Egyptian tombs).
