Steeped in history, Opatija became a favourite winter holiday destination for aristocracy and the wealthy during the Austro-Hungarian Habsburg era. The elegance and refined beauty of Croatia’s first tourist resort has been perfectly preserved in time for a new generation of guests to savour. Attractions include the beautiful Villa Angiolina and its botanic gardens – now a museum – and the earliest Opatija landmark, St James Church, built in 1420 but renovated many times over the centuries, and which gave the town its name (Opatija means ‘abbey’). Opatija’s lush, landscaped St James Park also offers rich views and the iconic Helios and Selene fountain by Graz sculptor Hans Rathautskog.
