Modern Zagreb emerged from the medieval settlements of Gradec and Kaptol on the southern slopes of the Medvednica mountain. These two settlements now form the area known as Gornji Grad (Upper Town), and they make up Zagreb’s original town core.

In Gradec you’ll find St Mark’s Church and Square with its late Gothic and Romanesque features. The 13th-century Kamenita Vrata (Stone Gate), forms part of Gradec’s former original city walls and is the gateway between Gradec and neighbouring Kaptol. Take a walk down Kaptol’s Tkalčićeva Street and you’ll discover cafes, the Dolac farmers’ market and Zagreb Cathedral (Croatia’s tallest structure).
